Official trailer released for Disney’s ‘Cruella’

Emma Stone’s take on the classic 101 Dalmatians villain has finally been revealed in the first official trailer for Cruella.

Set to be released on May 28, 2021, the film follows Cruella de Vil during her formative years. Stone portrays the title character in her first live action performance since 2019’s Zombieland: Double Tap. She is joined by the likes of Emma Thompson (Dolittle, Last Christmas), Joel Fry (Yesterday), Paul Walter Hauser (Cobra Kai, Richard Jewell) and Mark Strong (1917, Shazam!).

This of course is not the first time we’ve seen de Vil portrayed on the big screen in live-action form. Glenn Close famously brought life to the Dalmatian-loving antagonist in 1996’s 101 Dalmatians live-action remake, as well as its 2000 sequel. Close serves as an executive producer for Cruella.

Behind the camera is director Craig Gillespie, known recently for helming I, Tonya. Dana Fox and Tony McNamara wrote the screenplay from a story by Aline Brosh McKenna and Kelly Marcel & Steve Zissis. Andrew Gunn (Freaky Friday), Marc Platt (Mary Poppins Returns) and Kristin Burr (Christopher Robin) produced the film.

Academy Award® winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) stars in Disney’s “Cruella,” an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. “Cruella,” which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense & Sensibility”). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.

Cruella de Vil is a monumental Disney villain. Like many other of the House of Mouse rogues gallery, de Vil almost stands above the very film that made her famous. It was only a matter of time until she was given a solo film to flaunt her villainy.

Based on the trailer, it’s safe to say viewers are in for a wicked ride. After all, if she doesn’t scare you, no evil thing will.
